Calorie Burners: Activities That Turn Up the Heat

When it comes to burning calories, most people want to get as much mileage out of their exercise as possible. For many, the more calories they burn, the better they feel about their workouts. While energy expenditure should not be the only measure of a good workout (remember, it’s good for you and makes you feel pretty good, too), it is helpful to know what a given activity might be costing you in terms of calories.

A word of caution, though, about counting calories. Simply burning more calories will take you only so far down the road to better health. A well-balanced, low-fat diet, plenty of rest and a healthy attitude are also essential. And, of course, all things in moderation—even exercise.

Hi my name is Kim and I am 40 years of age. Six months ago I was unhappy with the way I looked. I was concerned about the weight I had put on over the last five years and also concerned about what that meant for my health.

One day I was talking to a neighbour who had been going to a trainer for about a year and she suggested that I meet with him. It took me a few months to gain the confidence to phone her trainer, but finally I did. When I first met Mike I felt embarassed since I was so heavy for my height but this changed very quickly. Mike made me feel comfortable right away. He started me on a program to change my eating habits and become more active. Mike regularly checked on my progress, making sure I stayed on track and he constantly gave me the support I needed.

Since this time I have lost 25 pounds and 18 inches total in my measurements. I have had many positive comments about how I look now, and my healthier lifestyle has made me a much happier person. I am no longer embarassed by my weight and my health is greatly improved.

That phone call was one I will not regret, and without Mike's coaching I would not be where I am now.

Supervised Workouts Improve Results

New research supports the benefits of hiring a qualified personal trainer to help you attain your fitness goals. Twenty men ages 18 to 35 were placed on a 12-week resistance-training program. Half the group trained unsupervised and maintained their own workout logs. The other half received one-on-one supervision with a certified personal trainer. In addition to keeping track of their workouts and charting their progress, the trainers provided spotting and advice to participants and made sure training loads were increased progressively.

Unsupervised participants made changes to their programs using the same principles and were self-motivated. Both groups achieved significant strength gains; however, the supervised group also made significant improvements in body mass, fat mass and fat-free mass. Researchers suggest that the trainer encouraged participants to use and tolerate greater training loads, thus eliciting greater gains than those who self-selected their training loads.

The Importance of Exercise and Diet

“Both (diet and exercise) are very important (in trying to achieve better-looking abs),” said Comana. Since most Americans tend to have an easier time cutting calories out of their daily diets instead of stepping up their workout routine, here are some simple tricks to cut extra calories:

Reduce added foods such as mayonnaise, butter, sauces and high-caloric salad dressings

Instead of skipping desserts altogether, treat yourself to your favorite dessert three times a week and only eat half

Try to cut back on sodas and alcoholic beverages, which tend to be high in calories

Don’t skip meals. This often leads to binge eating

Eat breakfast every day

Get enough sleep

The Truth About Better Abs

The good news is that working on a healthier, more physically active lifestyle, doesn’t have to be painful. It just takes consistency and a willingness to stick to a plan that’s right for you. While not everyone will be able to build the perfect abs, trimming overall body fat can go a long way toward a flatter tummy.

Remeber what you put into your body , you also put on your body.

Be a smart eater, and exercise regularly....Hydrate often.....

When you’re trying to lose weight, cutting out breakfast may be tempting. You figure you’re saving yourself some calories and you get a couple extra minutes to snooze. But research has consistently shown that the people who successfully lose weight are the ones that wake up and eat! Furthermore, people who eat breakfast regularly have better vitamin and mineral status and eat fewer calories from fat. So it seems that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

Eat Early, Weigh Less Later

Why does eating breakfast help people lose weight? It defies common sense that eating all those calories in the morning instead of simply skipping them would help.

Many studies, in both adults and children, have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers.

Why? One theory suggests that eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day and help people make better food choices at other meals. While it might seem as though you could save calories by skipping breakfast, this is not an effective strategy. Typically, hunger gets the best of people who skip breakfast, and they eat more at lunch and throughout the day.

Another theory behind the breakfast–weight control link implies that eating breakfast is part of a healthy lifestyle that includes making wise food choices and balancing calories with exercise. For example, consider the successful weight losers followed by the National Weight Control Registry, all of whom have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least one year. Some 80% of the people in the Registry regularly eat breakfast (and also follow a calorie-controlled, low-fat diet).

It’s worth noting that most studies linking breakfast to weight control looked at a healthy breakfast containing protein and/or whole grains—not meals loaded with fat and calories.

Eating breakfast also gives you energy to do more physical activity and be more productive in everything you do, which is also vital to weight control. So make the effort to get up in the morning and fix yourself a healthy meal.

Stretch after you do your regularly scheduled strength and endurance exercises. If you can't do endurance or strength exercises for some reason, and stretching exercises are the only kind you are able to do, do them at least 3 times a week, for at least 20 minutes each session. Note that stretching exercises, by themselves, don't improve endurance or strength. Do each stretching exercise 3 to 5 times at each session. Slowly stretch into the desired position, as far as possible without pain, and hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds. Relax, then repeat, trying to stretch farther. Stretching will increase your ability to perform an activity 10-20% better. The fact that your muscles have been readied by your stretching routine, will allow you to workout or perform some other form of activity pain free in in most cases , and it will certainly reduce the chance of injury. Stretching is vital to your overall well being whether you are young or old, a competitive athlete or someone who wants to walk the dog in the park.
